Lisanne Meester (1993) is a Dutch designer. She graduated from Willem de Kooning Academy in 2017 after which she started her own design practice.
In her work she focuses on translating observations into objects. By making high quality conceptual design pieces she initiates new perspectives on composition, material, environment and function.
Every project starts with an idea. This can be an idea about a certain form, a material she likes to explore, or about a certain story or concept. These ideas find their way into her sketchbook, a very important tool in her design method. She uses it to dump ideas, “there are so many in my head, they need to come out in order for me to understand them and to filter the bad from the good and the great ones”. Sketching often leads to making. All her objects and pieces are handmade in her own studio where she is free to experiment. These experiments moslty lead to even more ideas. This process of theoretical and practical research are the base of all her designs.
“Inspiration can come from everywhere. I get mine from architecture, materials, textures or weird connections in our daily surroundings. Photography helps me to find those details. It helps me to frame my inspiration and forms the base of new designs. Through the eye of a lens, the world looks different, more compact in a way. I like it like that.
I also like to read. Mainly books about design, strategies or materials, but also short stories and interviews. Reading supports me to form a concept on a theoretical level. This helps me to achieve a deeper meaning in my work.
Riding my bike, breathing in fresh air, helps me to relax and sort all my thoughts. And it keeps me fit, of course!”
